In India’s Union Territory of Chandigarh, the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) has been appointed to govern the vocational training institutes that include the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Industrial Training Centers (ITCs); the institutions are run by the government and private agencies respectively. The National Council of Vocational Education (NCVT) has the responsibility of outlining the policies of the vocational training centers.
The various objectives of the DTE include structuring the curriculum so as to develop the students to become proficient in the chosen trades; provide skilled labor to the varied industries; to reduce the unemployment rate in the country; and increase the quantity and quality of industrial produce through imparting systematic training to the aspirants.
A considerable population of India’s youngsters are interested in gaining technical know-how as compared to continuing with conventional studies. For catering to the technical education needs of the country’s youth population, in the year 1950, the Union Government of India set up a spate of vocational training institutes all across the Indian states, as per the Craftsmen Scheme.

Training in the various engineering and non-engineering trades is conducted in 4 semesters.
