In India’s union territory, Delhi, the Department of Training & Technical Education (DTTE) is the managing body of the vocational training courses that are conducted at the government-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and the privately-managed Industrial Training Centers (ITCs). The objective of providing vocational education is to technically train the students to gain employment in the varied industries for fueling the country’s development at large.
Across India, the various states implement the Craftsmen Scheme that was introduced in the year 1950 to impart training in an array of engineering and non-engineering trades through the vocational training centers. After completing the courses, the aspirants can apply for jobs in the respective trades or become self-employed individuals. Thus, the percentage of unemployed youth reduces; the industrial production is increased qualitatively and quantitatively through systematic training; and the youth population develops a technical bent of mind.
In the field of vocational education, the Scheme is important for developing the Craftsmen to cater to the existing and future skilled workforce needs, as part of the country’s ITI network. The various trade courses are affiliated to the National Council of Vocational Education (NCVT) that lays down the norms of conduct.
