In Lakshadweep, the Director of Labour, Employment and Training (DLET), the Union Territory Administration of Lakshadweep of the Government of India oversees the administrative functions of the vocational training centers in India’s Lakshadweep union territory. Like the other Indian states and union territories, Lakshadweep conducts a variety of engineering and non-engineering trade programs under the guidelines of the National Council of Vocational Education (NCVT).
The Craftsmen Scheme that was initiated by the Union Government of India in the year 1950 aims to impart technical education to the country’s youth population for meeting the existing and future skilled workforce needs of the varied industries; the country’s Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) network is deployed for conducting the various trade programs, as per the Scheme.
A large percentage of India’s young population is interested in acquiring technical education rather than continuing with higher school studies; and they can enroll in the vocational courses for pursuing their interests in the various trades. Upon successful completion of the courses, they have to undergo Apprenticeship training, following which they can apply for jobs in the chosen trades. Moreover, through systematic training, the skilled workforce can work towards improving industrial production – both qualitatively and quantitatively; besides, the rate of employment reduces as well.

The vocational trade courses are conducted in a series of 4 semesters.
