The National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) has the responsibility of framing the policies that govern the conduct of the vocational trade courses that are held at the government-based and privately-managed, Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and the Industrial Training Centers (ITCs) respectively. The Union Government of India instituted the NCVT that acts as the advisory body to the State Council of Vocational Training (SCVT) for implementing the given procedures in the various states.

Across the different Indian states, there are several ITIs and ITCs that have been constituted for those aspirants who are interested in pursuing technical education, rather than a school-based curriculum. The vocational trade programs include a 1-year Apprenticeship program as well, to provide practical experience to the aspirants and make them job-ready.
The trade programs can run for 6 months and go up to 2 years. The courses are held in 4 semesters (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ones); and for each semester, the pupils have to appear for the respective exams.
After successfully clearing the semester exams and completion of the Apprenticeship training, the students are required to appear for the All India Trade Test (AITT) after which they are awarded the National Trade Certificate (NTC) that makes them eligible to get employment in the various trades.
