There are a variety of engineering and non-engineering trades that can be chosen from, as part of the vocational training that is conducted through the government-based Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and privately-owned Industrial Training Centers (ITCs). The body that governs the trade courses across the various Indian states is the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). The guidelines are issued to the State Council of Vocational Training (SCVT) by the NCVT, based on which the trade programs are conducted.

Skill-based training was introduced to impart technical training to the aspirants who were more inclined towards becoming technically sound rather than pursuing traditional school studies. In the 1950s, the Craftsmen Scheme was introduced by the Directorate General of Employment & Training (DGET), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the Government of India, while keeping in mind the manpower requirements of the varied industries.
In general, the duration of the vocational trade programs can range from 6 months up to 2 years. Also, practical experience is included in the trade programs to help the students develop the necessary skills to work in the various trades.
The trade programs encompass 4 semesters (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ones); for each semester, the students have to appear for the respective exams. The semester examinations are held at several locations in India.
