In a series of 4 semesters (including the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ones), skill-based training is carried out through the various Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Industrial Training Centers (ITCs), in India. There are various trade courses that are designed for 6 months and can go up to 2 years. The governing body of the vocational training centers is the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) which implements the laid-down policies through the State Council for Vocational Training (SCVT) in the different states.

With over a choice of more than 130 trades to select from, the aspirants have a wide variety among several engineering and non-engineering trades. Vocational training is suitable for those candidates who want to gain technical knowledge, and are not interested in continuing with the school-oriented curriculum.
The Craftsmen Scheme was drafted in the 1950s by the Union Government of India for the constitution of the vocational training centers to meet the skilled manpower needs of industries for propelling the country’s growth. Also, upon successful completion of the trade programs, the students can gain employment and in turn, financial standing.
The trade courses are inclusive of 1-year Apprenticeship Training to impart practical knowledge for developing the skills of the students. Also, the pupils have to successfully clear the All India Trade Test (AITT) to obtain the National Trade Certificate (NTC) that makes them eligible to get employment in the respective trades.
